Bold indicates relatively local to Le Petit Capelier

All markets start early and most conclude around 1pm with exceptions for the big markets so do try to get there early to avoid the tourist crowds.

The stall holders around here are reluctant to negotiate but if pressed, and often when the market isn’t busy, they might.  Ask them for their ‘prix mieux’ (Pree mee-uh) (best price) to see if they’ll reduce certain items; similarly to anywhere in the world if you’re buying a lot of goods from one seller they’ll be more likely to accommodate a discount.  Don’t ever try to get fruit or veg cheaper but negotiating on large quantities of wine, for instance, might prove worthwhile.

There are many brocantes (antique markets) and vide greniers (car boot sales) throughout the summer particularly.  Look out for events at Villareal (30 mins), Lauzun (25 mins), Castillonnès (15 mins) all to the south and Beaumont (40 mins) to the north east.  There is a great deal of tut that gets dragged out from locals’ lofts and garages but sifting through it can uncover lovely things that the French have grown tired of: Ricard and Pernod decanters, old cutlery and wicker baskets are often found for a few euros.

Take plenty of water and look out for places to grab a coffee or a citron pressé and watch the world go by.

Have fun!

Dominic
